Gran & the Big C

Have you met my Gran? I would imagine most people in Haydock have – or have at least seen her or said Hello. She’s 89,  has lived in Haydock all her life and is my only living grandparent. Oh, and yesterday, she was diagnosed with Breast Cancer.

The word… “Cancer”, is horrible and scary and I think I am still in shock a little bit. She has been poorly on and off for a couple of months, but she has a tendency to over dramatise her malaise, so the family were just convinced she was fine. It seems we were wrong.

The last two times I was told one of my grandparents had cancer, I was also told it was terminal, so the whole thing unerves me. The good thing is, is that it seems they have caught it quite early and they aren’t rushing her in hospital, so that makes me feel a bit better, but not much.

The worst thing for me is that I can’t do anything to help make it better. I can’t buy a cream or bandage, I just have to sit back and watch in a way, which is hard for me as I always want to help.

Still, I have offered to take her to the hospital etc when she has to go, so that is at least something.

The world of course has a weird way of working, as the day before Gran was diagnosed with cancer, my cousin’s partner had a baby girl, Holly Rose (8lb 6oz). Our family is very small, so this is kind of a big deal. Good news, immediately followed by bad news. Huh.

Sunday

Today has been a day where I could have achieved so much, but I just felt floopy all day, so I just chilled. I’m not the least bit bothered. The day started off by Moochy having a lie in and me watching the first Bridget Jones film. :-)

Then Mooochy got up and we went outside to dig our cars out. Thankfully, it didn’t take as long as it did in January, and before we knew it, our cars revealed themselves and there was a huge pile of snow a the side of the road. After that, we went to my Gran’s to firstly hear how she nearly set her bungalow on fire by resting a tea-towel too close to a naked flame and secondly for her to give us £50 towards our central heating costs.

Between you and I dear reader, we don’t actually need the money, but she seems to take great pleasure in doing it and then she dines out on the twisted version of the story, which is usually that she “had” to give us the money – like we had gone to her cap in hand, desperate. She also turns the story into her being the hero, you kind of get used to it.

However, she is a women that has only just retired at the age of 88, who despite her severe hypcondriac tendancies, doesnt really have any real ailments to speak of – I guess I should take my hat off to her and ignore the rest….

She is ace after all and my only remaining grandparent. Bless her. xx
