Shine Manchester 2011 – Done!

So then, we did it, our Cancer Research Shine Marathon 2011 is now officially completed. It had highs and lows, but we did it  – well half of it. But more of that in a minute.

We spent the day part of Shine, preparing by pacing nervously around the house doing tidying type things to keep our minds and hands occupied. Eventually it became time to pack our stuff up (no mean feat) and take Peggy-dog to my mum’s which thankfully was stress free.

We got to Manchester at around 19:15 and made our way the GMEX (which is apparently now called the Manchester Central Convention Centre). We were really surprised at just how many people were there – maybe as many as 11,000!!! They were handing out water, reflective strips and snappy glo sticks and the atmosphere was great. What was also great was that Moochy’s mum, dad, sister and her partner Patrick came to see us off – what a a treat. It’s amazing how hugs and “Good Luck’s” make a difference to my nerves.

The walk itself  was great and awful at the same time. The first part of the route took us through Salford Quays, so the views were great, and the miles did seem to be ticked off fairly fast with the surge of people. I was slightly gutted that before that, in fact, after just 1 mile, I started to experience the same hip problems that I had last week. This meant that I was in pain from pretty much mile 1 :(

I really struggled with the decision about what to do, there were two events for Shine, the full marathon (what we signed up for) and the half marathon. Everyone sponsored me for the full thing and one of the reasons that I signed us was because I wanted to actually DO a full marathon…. I swung between going for it and doing that half right up until the pit-stop at 10 miles, when after a 5 minute sit down, I was in bloody agony and could hardly walk up a gangway to get past Manchester United. I kind of knew then there was no way I could walk the full 26 miles without being stupid pain, so I called it.

Even though I was gutted at  not being able to do what I set out to do, I still walked 13 miles and raised over £300 for Cancer Research UK. Even now, the day after I am 80% sure I did the right thing, with just a nagging 20% wondering if I should have just see how I got on. The restless, painful night I had supports the 80%, but you just never know.

Anyway, as usual, we took some photos, but before I share them with you, I have just one last thank you. This goes to my lovey Moochy who only signed up to to Shine so I wouldn’t have to do it alone. We have spent the last 3 months training together and he has been just amazingly supportive  – but over our 7½ years together, I have come to expect nothing less. I don’t often express my love for him publicly as, for the most part, I think these things are private. But he deserves a very special mention for walking and training with me for 3 months, not complaining once, gathering sponsorship and generally being my partner and 100% by my side.

So thank you Michael Keith Lysons, I love you and I couldn’t have done it without you….. xxxxx

Weekend of the Smug

So this weekend seems to have been all about walking and cake. Friday night we walked 5 miles and today we have walked 8 miles. I think we deserve a pat on the back dont you? Also yesterday we went to St Helens to get Moochy some new walking shoes…

He was very pleased with them and as I have the same ones, we are officially “shoe twins”. Then after the shoe shopping, we went to Bents Garden Centre to get some cake things, some ginger beer and to have some lunch. I had Beef Bourguignon and it was gorgeous and as you can see from the picture, after Moochy’s vegetarian lasagne, he indulged himself in a mammoth fairy cake. ;)

When we got home, I set about trying to teach myself how to cover a cake in sugar paste whilst Moochy watched a scary film. Again, as you can see from the picture I DID manage to cover a cake, but I have to admit I think the Pink lustre spray is horrible. However, even though I run out of icing sugar, I had a go at piping buttercream and it went ok to.

Today Moochy, Peggy and I walked 8 miles and now I am sat here with sore feet, but feeling as smug as you like. This is a personal best for me as I have never walked that far before. It took us 2 hours and 47 minutes and even though in the first mile or so I was struggling, a few jaffa cakes sorted me right out and it was great. My feet will get used to it over time and this is the whole point of the training.

n.b From our house to the start of the walk near the Ship is 1.28 miles. We were at 2.25 at the top of the hill near the dam and its about 1.75 miles around the dam itself.

Shine Training – on we go

People wang on about the benefits of exercise, but one thing they very often don’t talk about is the feeling of smugness. It’s the feeling of feeling pleased with yourself for having got off the couch and moved your arse for the good of your health. That is the feeling I’ve got right about now.

Tonight Moochy, Peggy and I all did our 2nd 5 miler of the week and it felt good. Slight change tonight was that due to my Nike+ app on my iPhone’s penchant for pausing itself for no reason, I’ve swapped to RunKeeper. Here is our run:

Also, in the week I had a realisation that so far this year, I have signed up for…

  • Shine Walking Marathon – Manchester – 1st May
  • Manchester 10k Run – Manchester 15th May
  • Cancer Research 5K Race for Life  – Haydock 24th July
  • The 24hr Thunder Run – Stafford 30th July

So, as only one of these events is walking, I thought I had better incorporate at least 1 run into my Shine Training. So from next week, my Wednesday walk will be a run and then after Shine is over, I will swap back to running.

It’s all go isn’t it… :) Also tomorrow, Moochy and I will going to our favourite garden centre which just happens to have an AMAZING home bakings section – time for a treat me thinks.

Cancer Research UK Manchester Shine 2011

Oh god, there is no going back now – I have just signed up for the Cancer Research UK Manchester Shine 2011 which is a WALKING marathon. Yes 26.2 miles of walking around Manchester overnight all in aid of Cancer Research. I must be mental, but what a challenge eh? The fact of the matter is that from Day 1 I haven’t really loved running, but I have always liked walking. So why not kick start my fitness for 2011 with a brilliant challenge…. why the hell not?!

So first things first, why not sponsor me?

You know it makes sense, and honestly, having done events similar to this before, it really does spur you round the course.

I have also been looking on the Shine website and as far as I can tell, this is the course:
